Marcel has been volunteering at the Museum for nearly three years and we could not be more appreciative. While he’s here, Marcel helps to keep exhibits clean for guests.
Whenever you hear a train horn, you can catch Marcel by our big window. “I love watching the trains go by while I’m at the Museum,” he says.
When asked what he likes best about volunteering at CMOL, Marcel says he enjoys working around both adults and children. “I just like volunteering at the Museum on a regular basis.”
He was also able to attend our recent Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Marcel enjoyed the food, taking pictures and spending time with the staff.
Marcel says the night was all about “having fun, having fun!”
Marcel’s mother, Laverna, beams with pride over the accomplishments of her son.
“He’s been through a lot of things throughout the years,” she explains, “but he’s always reached the goals we set for him.”
After being enrolled in a special education program in school, Marcel was able to obtain a high school diploma. He now also holds a job at Marshall’s, practices with a jazz workshop band and cooks.
Laverna also loves Marcel’s volunteer position at the Museum just as much as he does. “I like the atmosphere!” she explains. “He doesn’t have to sit around with nothing to do, and he’s learning how to be on time, follow directions.”
Outside of the Museum, Marcel is also involved with the Special Olympics. He participates in standing long jump, basketball, and running, among many other sports. Marcel was even on TV in both the Chicago and Bloomington markets for the state competition.
We’d like to thank Marcel for volunteering his time and effort to the Museum. CMOL truly appreciates you!
